How to Save on Auto Insurance

By: Jeanne Salvatore

Practical cost-cutting measures

To cut auto insurance costs: Take the highest deductible you can afford. A $1,000 deductible may reduce the cost of collision and comprehensive insurance by as much as 40%...Drop collision and comprehensive coverage when the value of a car is less than 10 times the premium...Take every discount available. Various insurers offer discounts for low-mileage driving, having an antitheft device, air bags, antilock brakes, daytime running lights, "good student" (sometimes defined as B+ or better) and college student away-from-home drivers, and carrying both auto and homeowners' insurance with the same company.
